Pinyin.info Free Chinese ABC Animal Coloring Book PDF

I just found pinyin pal's free animal PDF book today. Looks like a great little book for kids to look at if they are learning pinyin. I wish there were characters on it too, but I guess it's nice if you're just focusing on pin yin. It's also black and white so it works like a coloring book too and it would be good to print out. You could also send the PDF to kindle and read it on a tablet.

ABC Chinese books are always cute, and it's nice to have a free one.

Here's the link:

Parts of the head in Chinese

Had fun making a video today where our kids talk about the parts of the head in Chinese!

Learn Chinese with MiaoMiao Education Sheets

There is a realtively new Chinese learning program out there called Learn with Miao Miao. They seem to be a company that caters to children age 4-10 with no Chinese background who want an introduction to the language. They also have an app, which we'll review later, and it looks like they are putting out a TV show as well.

First, though, we thought we would share a link to their free worksheets.

Screenshots of the types of worksheets they offer:

There's lots more on their web site, so check it out if you're interested!

Getting started -- Aha Chinese

If you are a parent who speaks little to no Chinese, please read this first. Parents who speak Chinese have a goal to make their kid fluent from an early age, and parents who don't speak Chinese should have a goal to give their kid an introduction to the language that will springboard into future learning opportunities. You should still give your kids Chinese TV to watch, Chinese games to play, and Chinese music to listen to. But you are also going to need structured programs that teach Chinese as a second language.

Aha Chinese is one program we have found.

This video sort of sums up their program:

Essentially, they provide some cartoons that are mostly in English but also introduce Chinese terms, some story books that introduce Chinese culture and some Chinese words, some flash cards, and an audio CD.

Stuff included in the Aha Chinese package

Here's a really cute video they made of kids who have used their product:

Unfortunately, I just realized that maybe they are going out of business? I couldn't find a way to actually buy their product.... Hmmmm...

Big Head Son, Little Head Daddy (大头儿子小头爸爸)

Big Head Son, Little Head Daddy (大头儿子小头爸爸) is another Chinese cartoon that we really like. As the name suggests, it's about a kid with a big head and a dad with a small head. Each episode is only 8 minutes long, and for the most part they are pretty tame. It's not the slapstick comedy of Boonie Bears, but it's more grown-up than qiao hu. The theme song is very catchy, the mandarin is spoken pretty clearly, and our kids enjoy watching it. Give it a try!

Here's a playlist on youtube that has tons of episodes.

First we recorded as audio track together, and then we had the kids sing along with the music they made as a music video. They love watching it! I hope your kids do, too.

Our kids also take a turn reading the nursery rhymes. We think its adorable... but we're biased because they are our kids. Hopefully your kids like listening to our kids!

We plan to do lots of different kinds of podcasts in the future, such as sing twinkle twinkle little star together, counting, talking about fighting, and so on. Please give us a 5 star review on iTunes if you enjoy the podcast!

Free Chinese Coloring Book 免费中文彩色画图本

We're really excited about this Chinese coloring book that we made. We found a free coloring book online with lots of cute pictures, and it had a creative commons license, which means anyone is free to alter and build upon it (Adapted from the Imagitoons Coloring book by Mikal Shorts  -- https://archive.org/details/ImagitoonsColoringBook). We've turned it into an adorable Chinese coloring book!

Check it out for yourself!

You can view and download the entire Chinese Coloring Book for Free here.

Or, below are all pages in jpeg format.

Kids are always coloring stuff all the time... why not let them color pages that have some Chinese words on it?

We hope you enjoy!

cute Chinese baby talk

One of the advantages of starting your kids out young with 2 languages is that you get adorable baby speak in two languages. We speak mostly Chinese and some English to our baby, and he's always saying cute Chinese baby talk and cute English baby talk.

Start them when they're young!

宝宝自己读 -- 老鼠搬家 (Little Mouse's Moving -The Pleasant Goat and The Big Big Wolf)

We brought 宝宝自己读 -- 老鼠搬家 (Little Mouse's Moving -The Pleasant Goat and The Big Big Wolf) home from China a year ago, and we're realizing that it's the best children's book we have. We desperately wish we had more of these books. This book is fantastic, and I'm guessing that the entire series of 宝宝自己读 books are great.

They're great because the stories are made from all the most basic characters. The stories are made to specially introduce characters as you go throughout the books. The characters do not have pin yin, but when new characters are introduced there is pin yin. This really helps our kids learn the characters, and when they are learning or relearning new characters the pin yin helps them out a lot. See pictures below to understand what I mean.

The pictures are interesting, the story is fun, the sentences are simple, and new words are introduced with pin yin.

Shows how this book is based off commonly used characters

Other books in the 宝宝自己读 series

Again, we really think it's a great book, and it looks like the whole series is great. I was able to find the series from Chinese Publishers and imported some to my own online store. So here is the link to my store if you want to take a look at the series or other chinese books:

Ting Mama de Hua (听妈妈的话) -- song by Jay Chou

This is another song that's great to play around the kids. Jay Chou is a very famous Taiwanese singer who sings pop and rap infused with traditional Chinese music. He is very talented, and his song Ting Mama de Hua (听妈妈的话) is a classic. Play this around your kids and encourage them to both learn Chinese and listen to their parents ... a win win situation!

Also available on google play and iTunes.

宝贝 -- Song by Zhang Xuan (Desert Xuan)

Also available on google play and iTunes.

This is an adorable little song called 宝贝, which means "baby". She is singing about her baby and the lyrics are very loving and cute. Zhang Xuan's voice is very good and sounds great with her acoustic guitar. She also sings very clearly and is easy to understand. This is a great, uplifting song to play around your little ones!

I spy in Chinese (视觉大发现 -- 奇趣谜)

The I-spy series is a classic children's book in the US. As kids get to be around 3-5 years old and get longer attention spans, they often love studying fun, complicated pictures to find particular objects. I was happy when my wife brought this Chinese version of I spy back from China(视觉大发现 -- 奇趣谜).

This book is great, just like the English versions, but I will warn you that you probably must be a parent fluent in Chinese, with very good reading skills, to read this with your kids. My Chinese is not good enough to read to my kids what they are supposed to be looking for since I don't know many of the characters. I used to know about 3000 characters, and now I probably only know around 1000, and it seemed like half the time I wouldn't be able to read correctly what we are supposed to be looking for. It kind of takes the fun out of it.

If you can read Chinese like a pro, however, $5 from Amazon with prime shipping is a great deal and you will have fun with your kids.

Looks like the only library that has it is in Shanghai

鸟儿在歌唱:学会珍爱生命 (The bird is singing: learning to treasure life)

I found another translation of e a book in the the frog picture book series by Max Velthuijis on Amazon. It's called 鸟儿在歌唱:学会珍爱生命 (The bird is singing: learning to treasure life). It was also only $3 with prime shipping. For such a cheap price, free shipping, and good little Chinese picture books it really is a no brainer to buy them. The book we're talking about today is called . I reviewed another frog book earlier called 特别的日子:学会热爱生活 Special day: learn to love life.

The book is 25 pages and is about the story of how the frog and his friends deal with finding a bird on the ground. At first, they think the bird is sick, but eventually they realize that it's dead. Some are not sure what that means. They decide to bury it, so they go dig a hole. They have some somber and serious moments afterwards as they think about what happened. Then, they start playing again, and they realize how precious life is. At the end of the book, they see another black bird in the trees, singing.

I like these books because the story flows pretty quickly and keeps my kids entertained. The words are usually pretty simple, but there are some more advanced characters in there with some pretty imagery. There is pinyin, however, so it's easy to read along regardless.

Death is an interesting subject, especially for little kids. I think this book approaches it in a pretty good, matter of fact way. If talking about death at all with your kids scares you, be warned. However, I think it's a good teaching and bonding moment to read a story like this with your kids, even if you don't go into too much details about what it means to die.

Some pictures of the book:

Chinese children's book: 鸟儿在歌唱:学会珍爱生命 (The bird is singing: learning to treasure life)

Again, we highly recommend these books both because the pictures are good, the stories are good, and the price is absolutely right.
